The Eco House ‘Touches the ground lightly’.

The Eco HouseProject: ‘The Eco House’
Products used:
PHOENIX TO ADVISE
Architect: Paul Gladman
Installed by: Phoenix Aluminium

The ‘Eco House’, just north of Auckland, was built using a modular system. Laminated beams and posts provide the structure and the engineering is all in the frame. The plan is based around a standard building materials size, 1.2 x 2.4. The design system worked on that grid size which ultimately meant no wastage of materials and rapid construction because cutting of timber and other materials was avoided.

Paul Gladman, the architect, says a ‘building sustainably’ philosophy has gone into the planning. Timber is used wherever possible. There are minimal foundations and as it is a heavy pollutant, minimal use of concrete as well.

Phoenix Aluminium provided the joinery using standard domestic joinery with no jamb liners and returning the Gib Board into the liner groove, giving a very clean crisp architectural look to the inside. Double glazing could not be used without changing the sizes and configurations of the joinery which neither the Architect nor Phoenix wanted to do, as doing so would compromise the design.

The housed is termed a ‘lifestyle home’. It has the ability to change shape by inserting or removing walls to suit the occupants.

The basic eco principals have been learned and developed over time by Paul Gladman and
applied very successfully in this house, proving that an eco house can comfortably be part of
prevailing trends in look and costs.

Judges Apartments Revitalize Heron Point with Outstanding Design & Flair.

Project: ‘Heron Apartments’
Products used:
 Architectural Series
Architect: Leuschke Architects
Contractor: Dominion Constructors
Installed by: Phoenix Aluminium

This Parnell Landmark is the end result of a comprehensive and collaborative design process where Equinox, Leuschke Architects, Dominion Constructors and Phoenix took a partnership approach to enable all parties to have input into the specification of the highest quality joinery systems for buyers with an eye for design excellence.

This High End Residential development required specific design principles to meet a number of challenges such as the acoustic levels, wind zone, waterhead & drainage capabilities and design aesthetics. Judges Apartments in it's higly exposed position required Phoenix to initiate a design review in order to design and manufacture architectural sliding and stacking door systems with superior drainage capacity to accomodate very high design wind pressures.

This required all sliding door units and windows to be rebated into the floor slab to acheive a flush interior exterior flow, to a floating paving stone decking system.

The building envelope is made up of multiple cladding types (precast panels with and without stone facade, alucabond and custom made aluminium flashings) over various levels with some very technically difficult manufacture and installation detailing.  With this mind Dominion Constructors and their Site Manager Shane Guy have acheived an exceptional overall finish.

It has been a privilege to be involved in such a prestigious project located in a historical and architectural timescape such as Judges Bay, with Colonial Church built in 1850 and the iconic Parnell Salt Water Baths.

Idyllic Holiday Home sited and designed to capture Natures Best - "Sun, Surf & Sand"

Project: ‘Radar Road - Hotwater Beach'
Products used: Architectural Series
Architect: Copeland Architects
Contractor: Hotwater Design & Construction
Installed by: Phoenix Aluminium

This exclusively situated "Bach" set upon the crest of a hilltop overlooking Hotwater Beach and the surrounding coastline, is modular in design so all living spaces maximize the incredible views.

Started in May 2007 by Chris Pollock of Hotwater Design & Construction the home took 18 months to complete, with a crew of between 3 and 7 dependent on on site requirements at the time.  The excavations, foundations setup and laying of the floor slab ocurred over the worst winter in decades, and were completed in October 2007.  At Christmas the roof was completed and wall framing and openings were confirmed with the overseas based "kiwi" owner in the New Year.  Phoenix undertook measure and window supply over the months March through August 2008, with practical completion acheived Christmas 2008.

Given the location of the home and technical nature of the job, Phoenix Aluminium were very mindful of the cost associated with incorrect configurations, sizes, manufacture and or delivery damage, therefore the use of delivery was utilized and lifted by Phoenix Hiab truck on to site, in close proximity to the installed location.

A close relationship was formed with the Hotwater Design & Construction Crewwith prized "Jaffa" koha of 20 McDonalds cheeseburgers exchanged at each site visitfor locally caught and smoked schnapper, a great deal from all parties perspectives!  The subtrade relationship from Chris's perspective was one of the easiest he has had to deal with as the 3 Steve's were the primary Phoenix contatcs for all aspects of the job from sales, measure and installation.

I am sure you will agree the architecture, placement of the home and surrounding land and seascape views are second to none!

Phoenix would like to take the opportunity to thank Hotwater Design and Construction, Copeland Architects and the Homeowner for their business and the opportunity to be involved in such a fantastic project that takes into account everything New Zealand life is all about - Sun, Surf & Sand!

North Shore Commercial Building displays cutting edge style with dramatic results.

Project: ‘The Wedge’
Products used:
Commercial Series Concealed Structural Jamb
Architect: Lance Herbst
Installed by: Phoenix Aluminium

This North Shore Icon features 6 metre high structurally glazed windows, with not one frame the same as the next. The free standing tilt slab panelling is installed at various angles to create multiple shadow lines and capture the viewers attention.

This required Phoenix Aluminium to specifically engineer a Project Specific extrusion to acheive this end result.

The entry is expansive, creating an instant feeling of space. One workspace flows to the next with an open-plan format throughout the building; natural light enters the building through multiple openings whilst giving a sense of privacy.

The design of the building in collaboration with the Builder, Architect, Phoenix Aluminium and the developer, is a modern minimalist building that appears float above the land beneath and will surely stand the test of time.

Chases for back flashings were needed to be cut into each and every opening, a purpose designed sill tray for each and every unit was required, as structural sealant was the first line of defence a mechanical seal was essential, this was located inside the building line, but deigned to direct any failure water to external surafces.

Architects envisioned the appearance of glass meeting concrete, which was achieved through the development of a concealed structural jamb.  This sight line goal was achieved internally by returning the gib over the fixing leg.
